First make sure the Visual Studio Addin installer copied the required files to your Addins folder. The default location of the Addins folder is:

  • XP: "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Visual Studio 200x\Addins"
  • Vista: "%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Visual Studio 200x\Addins"

Otherwise it should be one of the folders defined in Visual Studio ( Tools -> Options -> Environment -> Add-in/Macros Security).
The addin folder should contain both BuildVersionIncrement_vs200x.Addin and BuildVersionIncrement.dll.

Sometimes addins in Visual Studio do not register correctly (this is a general problem with Visual Studio).
You can however reset the addin, which will force the addin to re-register. Do this by starting visual studio from the Visual Studio Command Prompt with the /ResetAddin argument followed by the FullClassName of the addin:

  • Visual Studio 2005: MSDEV.EXE /ResetAddin BuildVersionIncrement.Connect
  • Visual Studio 2008: DEVENV.EXE /ResetAddin BuildVersionIncrement.Connect
